To do good and enjoy the work

Behind every good business there is a mission statement that shapes the way the company operates. I’ve been thinking about what would be a good mission for our business. As I read the book of Ecclesiastes, I had an inspiration: a simple phrase: “to do good and enjoy the work”.

The first part, “to do good” means that what we do conforms to God’s standard outlined in the Bible.

  1. Do to others what you would have them do to you.
  2. Do the work with all our heart, mind, and strength

It will be helpful to complement the mission statement and general principles with a number of specific applications (such as do’s and don’ts) appropriate for the industry the business is in.

The second part, “enjoy the work” simply means we need to take delight in our work, to have fun, be happy, and be grateful for the work we are trusted with. It really is the other side of the same coin. When we are doing well in our work, we naturally feel joyful. At the same time, when we enjoy our work, we will automatically give it our best.

We want our business to be a power for good instead of greed. It all starts with the mission statement: “to do good and enjoy the work”. Simple yet profound. Practical yet spiritual.
